Kyoto Fusioneering and Canadian Nuclear Laboratories Launch Joint Venture, Fusion Fuel Cycles Inc.
We are pleased to announce the launch of Fusion Fuel Cycles Inc. (FFC), a joint venture between Kyoto Fusioneering (KF) and Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL). FFC merges CNL's tritium processing capabilities with KF's fusion fuel cycle expertise, delivering safe and efficient tritium fuel cycle systems for global fusion programs.
FFC will build and operate UNITY-2, a cutting-edge tritium fuel cycle test facility, expected to commence operations by mid-2026. UNITY-2 will serve as a user facility, closing key tritium processing science and technology gaps to support the development of a fusion plant. We invite fusion developers to collaborate with us in designing and building their tritium processing systems.
Fusion Fuel Cycle Expert Christian Day Joins Kyoto Fusioneering
Kyoto Fusioneering welcomes Dr. Christian Day to the team. As a world-class expert in fusion fuel cycles, Dr. Day brings a wealth of experience from his time with the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) Team and the European DEMO team. His exceptional knowledge and expertise will play a vital role in accelerating the development of our fusion fuel cycle systems, which are crucial technologies for the advancement of commercial fusion energy plants.
We are also excited to announce the establishment of our European subsidiary, Kyoto Fusioneering Europe GmbH (‘KFEU’), which will serve as a hub for technological development and business expansion in Europe, to further contribute to the earliest realization of fusion energy.
The Fusion Era –Exporting Kyoto Fusioneering’s Gyrotrons to the UK
We announced this month the successful delivery of key gyrotron components to the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA), marking a significant step in international collaboration. These gyrotrons will power the MAST-U fusion machine at the Culham Centre for Fusion Energy (CCFE), demonstrating the global nature of fusion research and the growing demand for cross-border partnerships.
Kyoto Fusioneering is proud to provide advanced gyrotron technology from Japan, contributing to UKAEA's mission and supporting the development of future fusion power plants.
Read our “The Fusion Era” blog post to learn more about this milestone that we achieved as a team, and the international journey from manufacturing to delivery at UKAEA.
Embassy of France and CEA Visit Kyoto R&D Center
We welcomed the Embassy of France in Japan (Ambassade de France au Japon) and CEA (French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission) to our R&D centre in Kyoto on May 16th.
During the visit, our executives presented an insightful overview of our ongoing UNITY program, showcasing our state-of-the-art facilities dedicated to advancing engineering technologies essential for the commercialization of fusion energy. We also highlighted our gyrotron systems, exemplifying Japanese manufacturing excellence and decades of rigorous research and development.
Head of Business, Yuto Yoshioka, represented Kyoto Fusioneering at Fusion Private Public ITER Workshop
Keishi Sakamoto, Christian Day, and Yuto Yoshioka, attended a recent public-private workshop by ITER Organization, presenting J-Fusion and Kyoto Fusioneering's activities at ITER Organization's site in Cadarache, France. Fusion scientists from 50+ companies and organizations discussed achievements and challenges, exploring ITER's potential support.
Kyoto Fusioneering recognizes the vital role of merging public and private efforts to accelerate fusion energy commercialization. We're globally involved in R&D collaborations with public institutions, including receiving three awards from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)'s INFUSE program. Additionally, we have a strategic partnership with Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) in Germany, a joint venture with Canadian Nuclear Laboratories in Canada, active involvement in Japan's J-Fusion Council, and a communication framework agreement with UK Atomic Energy Authority.
